Arts Council England Writers' Awards announced

The latest round of Arts Council England Writers' Awards has seen fifteen recipients walk away with cheques worth £7,000. The awards aim to provide funding for writers at the crucial stage of a work-in-progress. Presenting the winners with their cheques at the National Portrait Gallery, new Arts Minister Estelle Morris said: ‘Good reading and writing matter enormously and the Arts Council is enabling a great deal of imaginative work to happen on both fronts throughout the community.’ ‘In the last two Government comprehensive spending reviews, funding for literature has increased by 77% and 50% respectively, evidence surely that literature is a vital part of the cultural landscape.’ The Arts Council’s Writers’ Awards have been awarding grants to writers since 1965.
