Arts Council England bringing diverse cultures to Sunderland Mela
A grant of £5000 will help bring artists from Africa and the Balkans to the Sunderland Mela, Arts Council England North East has announced. The Mela, which takes place on July 13 at Seaburn Showfield, will showcase a diverse range of local, national and international artists in celebration of arts and music. The £5000 grant was awarded to the Unity Organisation to bring artists from further afield. Founder of the Unity Organisation Tahri Khan commented: ‘Sunderland Mela provides an excellent opportunity to unite people from different cultural backgrounds and to raise awareness of the multicultural society in which we live.’ Unity is working in partnership with Sunderland City Council, Northumbria police, Voices, Sunderland Health Authority and local school to organise the event.
