New Minister pledges support for Arts Council of Wales
Arts Council of Wales (ACW) Chief Executive Peter Tyndall, welcomed Wales’ newly appointed Minister for Culture, the Welsh Language and Sport, Alun Pugh AM, to the Arts Sector recently. Pledging his support for the ACW, Minister Pugh said that the Council had played a 'significant role' in supporting the arts sector in Wales. 'There are clear challenges across all art forms, and the Welsh Assembly Government has already committed an annual budget in excess of £22 million to the Arts Council of Wales to help meet those challenges,’ he said. ‘More importanty, we see the development of a strong and productive relationship with the Council as a key way of ensuring that the arts continue to make a vital contribution to the life and economy of Wales,’ he said. Minister Pugh also acknowledged the ACW’s regional services and commitment to meeting their own challenges. ‘I endorse their endeavours to address issues, such as engaging young people in the arts, within a culture of equal opportunity and ensuring that the sector develops the skills it needs through access to appropriate professional development and training,’ The Arts in the Heart Conference places emphasis on open debate and consultation, and, as Minister Pugh asserted, will aid in developing a ‘fruitful’ partnership between the ACW the Welsh Assembly Government.
