UK library research highlights changing needs of young people

Resource, the UK council for museums, archives and libraries, has published a new research report highlighting the changing needs of young people, to support a study on the future of libraries. The new report, Start with the Child: The Needs and Motivations of Young People, was commissioned by Resource to support a report by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information (CILIP) exploring the future of libraries for young people. Sue Wilkinson, Director of Learning and Access at Resource, said CILIP's report outlined important implications for the library sector if it is to meet the changing needs of young people. ‘It [CILIP report] stresses the important role libraries can and do play in young people’s lives, and sets out a vision for the kind of library service which must be developed in the future if we are going to meet young people’s leisure and learning needs and expectations,’ she commented. ‘The report makes a cogent case that children’s libraries need increased investment, but it also argues for services which are relevant and responsive, and stressed the need for the library community to work closely with children to deliver effective services,’ Wilkinson continued. ‘This new research report was critical in informing the CILIP report, but it has powerful messages for service managers from across all three domains,’ she said.
