New vision for UK libraries
UK Arts Minister Tessa Blackstone recently launched the British Government’s new 10-year strategic vision for libraries, entitled Framework for the Future. In launching the strategy, Minister Blackstone said that the government aimed to make the promotion of reading a key priority for libraries, in addition to their role in helping people to be part of the communications revolution. A further role outlined in the strategy is for libraries to assist in tackling social exclusion in communities. Framework for the Future also points to the need for libraries to serve the needs of the local communities. The strategy aims to enable all libraries to develop in accordance with local need. A newly-constituted Advisory Council on Libraries, in addition with the Culture Department and Resource (the Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries), will work with leaders from local government, libraries and education services to make the document’s ideas a reality. ’Framework for the Future’ is available from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport HERE.
