Scottish Arts Council funds gallery expansion

The Scottish Arts Council (SAC) recently announced that £2 million in lottery funding would contribute to renovations at the Stromness Pier Arts Centre in Orkney. The centre, which currently houses a collection of 20th century art, is said to be the only major venue in the local area for displaying contemporary and historic artworks of national significance. The expansion plans are aimed at providing more gallery space to exhibit contemporary works. Iain Munro, Head of Capital at the SAC, emphasised that the plans take the existing buildings' heritage status into account. 'An exciting contemporary solution has been developed which is sensitive to the historic context of the site but respects the quality of the existing spaces,' he commented. In addition to aesthetic improvements, plans also include the provision of equal access to all buildings and activities for the whole community – beginning with free admission. Meanwhile, spaces for education and workshop activity, as well as a new library with computer access, are among the plans to enhance arts education in the area. Neil Firth, Director of the Pier Arts Centre, welcomed the additional funds, indicating resources over the past few years for the venue had been 'limited'. 'The gallery has been at the limit of its capacity... and our plans will enable us to respond to many more opportunities,' he said. 'Orkney Islands Council has also offered support, and we hope this will shortly include some financial support.'
