Multicultural Development Program launced

The Multicultural Arts Professional Development (MAPD) program, a new training module initiated under the Australia Council’s Arts in a Multicultural Australia policy, has recently been launched. A partnership between the council, Royal Melbourne Institute for Technology (RMIT) University, the Australian Multicultural Foundation and Kape Communications, MAPD has selected 20 skilled artsworkers from across the nation for its inaugural intake, each of whom will complete a practically-based research project. Taking a focus on marketing, management and income generation for the multicultural arts sector, the program is, according to organisers, designed to assist and further skill, leaders to benefit the arts industry as a whole. Based on needs identified by Australia Council research, the course will offer sessions with consultants in areas including multicultural policy, tourism, corporate events, sponsorship and IT. MAPD is also currently being assessed by RMIT Masters of Business Administration for possible inclusion as a component of the 2003 MBA program. 'This is about recognising and enhancing the skills of leaders in the multicultural arts sector. There is high demand internationally for our multicultural arts, and this program will go some way to increasing the opportunities to present Australian multicultural artists to the general public, as well as the international arena,' says Hass Dellal OAM, Director of the Australian Multicultural Foundation, and a MAPD trainer.
