Equating culture with freedom
Belizean Prime Minister Said Musa has officially inaugurated the Banquitas House of Culture, located in multicultural Orange Walk Town. Describing the event as historic for Belize as a nation, Said remarked that cultured people are best prepared for freedom. It is through culture, he noted, that Belize will be prepared to fully participate in the process of globalisation. 'Through culture, we realise that we must assert an identity that we are Belizeans; culture serves as a dynamic ferment for us to recognise our identity and freedom,' he added. Johnny Briceno, Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment and Area Representative for Orange Walk Central stated that the area of Banquitas has played a crucial role in the multicultural history of Orange Town. He anticipates the new House of Culture, which will house an art gallery, will play an equally crucial role in the future of the people of the region. Meanwhile, a Chinese Food and Crafts Fair was held on the streets of Belize City on September 28, aimed at expressing support for solidarity and brotherhood for the people of Belize. Taking place on the compound of the Embassy of the Republic of China located in Belize City, the event was organised by the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce in Belize, the Belize Chinese Association, ROC Veterans Association in Belize, Hakka Association in Belize, the Belize-Taiwan Economic and Cultural Exchange Association, the Chinese Christian Church, Belize, and members from the private sector of the Chinese community, and helped to raise funds to assist the Belize Red Cross.
