Taiwan Foundation announces winners of national art award

The National Culture and Arts Foundation (NCAF) of Taiwan has recently announced the recipients of its sixth annual National Awards for the Arts, honouring artists for their endeavours in artistic fields. This year, 49 artists participated in the awards taking part either through direct application, via recommendation or through selection by the nomination committee. The NCAF notes that the four recipients were chosen for their creative histories which embody 'slews' of Taiwan island history. They are as follows; Writer, Chien-Wu Chen, who developed his literary skills while growing up under Japanese governance, colonisation and war. His works are said to reflect, in depth, the climate of his era and the deep cry of human disentanglement from the heart. Artist Hsiao Chin, who arrived in Taiwan from Mainland China, and after struggling abroad for nearly 40 years, returned to the island, accepting a teaching offer from Tainan National College of the Arts. Since his return he is said to have set a fine example for the school’s young art students to emulate. Hai-Tai Huang, who is considered to be a national treasure of Taiwanese Folk Art, is said to have consistently created works that been rooted deeply within the vitality of Taiwanese civil society, and are said to have unceasingly reflected the characteristics special to Taiwanese Folklore. Hwai-Min Lin has devoted himself to the creation of modern dance works. In his works, he is said to have unearthed various levels of Taiwanese culture, and has successfully introduced Taiwanese dance works to the international stage, from which he has attained great international acclaim. During the awards ceremony, scheduled for late September, each of the recipients will receive a cash prize of NT$ 600,000, and a trophy designed by the late master sculptor Ying-Feng Yang. Additionally, the NCAF has planned a series of promotional activities, including the holding of a 'Panel Discussion on the Recipients’ Artistic Achievements', the filming of a 'Documentary on the Recipients', the launching of an 'Artist-in-Residency Program', and the publication of a 'Recipients Biographies' book.
