ACW launches touring exhibition
The Arts Council of Wales launched its touring exhibition celebrating the Year of the Artist Wales (YOTAW) on August 6, honouring living artists and promoting greater awareness of their role and status in society. Caernarfon-based artist Bedwyr William was commissioned by Ffotogallery, a national development agency for photography in Wales, on behalf of the ACW to create the touring exhibition and to elicit an astute visual commentary 'which creatively articulated aspects of artistic energy generated by the YOTAW.' According to a media release, Williams applied himself to the task by travelling across Wales observing, documenting and gathering evidence about some of the arts activities and individuals who benefited from the initiative. The multimedia exhibition that has resulted combines sound, video excerpts, texts photographs and maps, with Williams 'excavating some of the grittiest, extraordinary at times, hilarious aspects of our diverse cultural workplaces.' ACW Chairman Sybil Crouch has commented that YOTAW has touched a wide range of artists across Wales and the council felt that at the end of the year it would like to create a legacy project to mark the event. 'We are delighted that this project has not only documented the cross-section of the individuals and organisations that participated in the initiative, but has also provided an opportunity for a young Welsh artist to create an original work of art in his own right,' she commented.
