Invitation to tender, The Crafts Council
Contemporary Craft Sector Mapping and Impact Study 2011
Brief
The Crafts Council seeks to contract a freelance research consultant or consultancy, to undertake a mapping and impact study of the contemporary craft sector.
The research project is a key element of the Crafts Council’s Research Strategy , and its findings are anticipated to be launched at Assemble 2011: the Crafts Council Conference (provisionally scheduled for Autumn 2011). It follows a substantial research programme undertaken between 2008 and 2010, which has resulted in a suite of publications available at www.craftscouncil.org.uk.
Aims:
To provide quantitative evidence of the contemporary craft sector’s profile, characteristics and impact, which:
1. Supports contemporary craft professionals in planning for creative and business development, and in securing appropriate support for their work.
2. Informs the Crafts Council and other sector bodies in their work supporting professional, business and creative development and public engagement.
Objectives:
• To indicate the size, economic impact and demographic profile of the contemporary craft sector in 2011.
• To identify size, economic impact and demographic profile trends, and to compare where possible with data available for makers (for 1994 and 2004 ).
• To identify relevant sector characteristics and trends, undertaking comparison with previous data where possible.
Considerations:
The study seeks to map and describe the impact of the sector as a whole, and should engage craft professionals not already in touch with the Crafts Council.
Data from the Crafts Council’s1994 and 2004 reports (concerned solely with makers) should be used to identify trends in sector development where possible.
The research should create a replicable methodology for future use, and should provide the Crafts Council with information to inform future decision-making.
Scope:
The research should focus on contemporary craft, not including heritage / traditional / vernacular craft. Its geographical focus is currently England, with the possibility of additional partnership funding being secured to extend its scope to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Methodology:
To be proposed, for a fee of £40,000 - £50,000.
Outcomes:
A final report, including an executive summary, should be supplied in an electronic format to be agreed with the Crafts Council.
Timescales:
NB Shortlisted consultants will be notified on Wednesday October 20th, and invited to attend an interview at the Crafts Council on Friday October 22nd.
