Background
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is looking for an exceptional individual to lead the British Library at a critical period of its development as it faces strategic issues of profound significance as it continues on its digital journey.

The British Library is one of the greatest research libraries in the world. As it pursues its mission to advance the world’s knowledge, the Library is increasingly exploiting the advantages of digital and web technology to offer wider access to its renowned collection. A major programme of strategy development is currently under way to articulate the Library’s operating environment in 2020 and to develop a 2020 vision for the British Library.

Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will be an individual of significant stature bringing previous chair experience and a track record in successfully developing strategy and delivering significant change in a large and complex organisation; someone who understands, through experience, the importance of a high performing Board and the vital contribution that non executive members can play in challenging, stimulating, and supporting the Executive Team.

The successful candidate will be an individual prepared to lead the Library’s fundraising efforts, an individual who will not be conflicted in fundraising terms in any major way and whose high level presence will in itself add to the Library’s visibility.

Chairing the British Library Board will be a major focus for the individual, the time commitment for which equates to about two days per week.

Criteria

•The ability to lead a high profile organisation and a proven track record in leadership and managing change in a complex and dynamic environment gained either in the private or the public sector. •A real interest in the British Library, an understanding of its remit and empathy with its aims as a critical resource for UK research, a crucial underpin to business and enterprise, and as a world-class cultural institution.
•An appreciation of the profound and complex impact of new technology on the Library’s operating environment and on its current and future role.
•The ability to advise and influence government ministers and other key decision makers both national and internationally.
•A commitment to supporting fundraising.
•An understanding of the diverse communities in the UK and a real commitment to promoting diversity.
•Strong interpersonal, representational and presentation skills.
•Experience as a non executive member of a Board and a proven ability to work closely with senior executive teams to develop future strategy.
