The Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in London in 2012. They are a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase our sporting talent, our capital city, and our country.
The Government Olympic Executive (GOE) – which sits within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) – is a dynamic and fast-moving team with lead responsibility across Government for delivering a successful London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We are working to ensure the Games are a success, value for money, and leave a lasting legacy across the country.
This role is a fantastic opportunity to be a central part of our dynamic communications team and contribute to the delivery of effective communications about the 2012 games, working closely with colleagues across the Olympic family.
The postholder will:
Manage smooth organisation and delivery of various ministerial events, in some cases acting as the public face of the GOE
Support management of research projects
Manage the production and publication of annual and quarterly reports
Update and maintain GOE pages on the external DCMS website
Manage internal communications, including production of the monthly GOE newsletter and maintenance of GOE intranet pages
Support engagement with other Government Departments and NDPBs through management of a shared extranet
Work closely with the GOE speechwriter, providing research and other support
Produce briefings and respond to MP and other cases as required
Person specification
Essential Requirements
The postholder must be able to:
Write clearly, concisely and accurately in plain English for all formats
Identify and understand internal and external audience needs and adapts style and language to meet them
Experience of writing for the web and of research projects would be desirable.
Core competences
Leading and Managing People
The postholder will need to manage a range of stakeholders – both internal and external – to deliver events and communications. The candidate must be comfortable dealing with people from at a range of levels, including senior stakeholders.
Financial Management
The postholder will ensure that the events they plan deliver value for money and are within the agreed budget.
Programme and Project Management
The candidate must have the ability to work as part of a team and to take lead responsibility for specific tasks, motivating internal and external stakeholders to undertake necessary work and meet deadlines. They will need to supervise delivery of tasks and plan ahead, with realistic timescales allowing time for handling contingencies. They must also update the team on progress against planned deliverables.
Deploying Analytical Skills and Using Evidence
The postholder must be able to analyse and manipulate information for the purpose of briefing and communications.
Partnership Working and Stakeholder Management
The candidate must be an excellent communicator, building relationships with key stakeholders and providing written advice and communications to Ministers and others.
