Art Consultant, Art Bank

Summary
Under the direction of the Director of the Art Bank, supports Canadian contemporary artists by promoting and marketing the Art Bank Collection, manages a marketing module/support team, negotiates the rental of works of art, and performs other related duties.

Knowledge and skills
The incumbent must possess an excellent knowledge of the history and current status of contemporary Canadian visual arts, including knowledge of First Peoples visual artists. The incumbent must also possess a good knowledge of the mandate and functions of the Canada Council for the Arts and of the Canada Council Art Bank.

Knowledge of the diversity of cultural practices in Canada, including non-Western forms, is an asset.  In line with the objectives of the Canada Council, sensitivity to their distinct value and the contribution that they make to the artistic and cultural life in Canada is essential.

The incumbent must possess strong marketing, communication and interpersonal skills, as well as strong team working skills to clearly, effectively, and tactfully communicate with clients and colleagues at the Council and in other organizations.  Skills in the areas of analysis of financial data and project expenses are also required.  Time and priority management skills are essential.

The Incumbent must have good supervisory skills in order to manage a small marketing team; instruct and direct staff; delegate effectively in order to manage an extremely demanding schedule; provide advice and guidance; and to review, assess and report on performance of the team members.

The incumbent must have the ability to anticipate problems and to show leadership in identifying and responding to issues.  S/he must be able to use new office technologies to increase work efficiency. Strong analytical skills, memory skills, diplomacy, and an ability to work in a flexible manner are also required.

Such knowledge and skill is normally acquired through completion of a university degree or equivalent professional practice in the field.

Experience
The incumbent must have from three to five years' experience in visual arts administration, preferably including experience in the marketing and display of works of art and project co-ordination.

The incumbent should also have experience managing a small staff and in working in a competitive, results-oriented environment.
