Director of Research & Policy

The Center for Arts Education (CAE) is committed to restoring, stimulating, and sustaining quality arts education as an essential part of every child’s education in the New York City public school system. We identify, fund, and support exemplary partnerships and programs that demonstrate how the arts contribute to learning and student achievement. CAE is dedicated to influencing educational and fiscal policies that will support arts education in all of the City’s public schools.  Since its founding in 1996, CAE, has provided almost $40 million in funding to schools, cultural, and community-based organizations to stimulate the restoration of arts education to the New York City public school system. CAE is seeking a Director of Research and Policy. A newly created position, the Director of Research and Policy is a member of CAE’s senior staff and leadership team and will play a key role in guiding the future of CAE. He/she will be charge of the development and implementation of a research, evaluation, and analysis program in support of universal access to arts education for all New York City public school students. This position will be chiefly responsible for building a research program that provides core information for the development of data-driven programs, public engagement activities, information for internal and external purposes, and more. Duties and Responsibilities: This is a senior position that reports to the executive director and collaborates closely with members of the Board of Directors and staff. The principal responsibilities are: Research: Including the gathering of data related to key arts education needs in the New York City Public Schools, close work with CAE’s independent evaluators, and the development and maintenance of partnerships with data providers and key government officials. Data Management: Maintain data on CAE’s activities in terms of types of activity, participants, benefits and distribution across locations, grade level, constituent group, and content areas. Data Analysis: Including identifying data sources, collecting data, developing and maintaining partnerships to accomplish data work, and analyzing and reporting on data. Policy Analysis: Including researching and reporting on important arts education research and producing and disseminating special reports and issue briefs on policy issues. Data Dissemination: Presenting data to meet the a variety of needs, including: the use of data in a variety of CAE public awareness programs and publications; the use of data in response to queries from government agencies, press, funders, and others; and the use of data in the creation and support of CAE programs. Education and Experience: + Advanced degree in educational research and/or equivalent work experience, strong background in data analysis, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and interest in and knowledge of Pre-K-12 arts education. + The candidate must have a strong administrative background and work well in a busy and fast-moving environment. + Application should specify experience with various computer programs, from SPSS or similar data analysis programs to Microsoft Access, etc. Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus. + The candidate should be comfortable interacting with teachers, administrators, and students. + Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work as part of a team are a must. + Experience in training front line staff and management to analyze data and reflect on implications for practice.
