Head, Media Arts Position Number: 3100 Division: Arts Classification: EX-1 Affiliation: Management Location: Ottawa Duration: Indeterminate Salary range: $94,000 to $110,700 Summary Under the direct supervision of the Divisional Director, Arts, manages the programs, activities, employees and budget of the Section; promotes and implements the Canada Council’s governance policy, the policy of peer evaluation and the rules and procedures of the Arts Division; develops policy and program initiatives for enhancing Canada Council's role in the development of Canada's artists and arts organizations; promotes and ensures fair and equal access to programs by all qualified artists and arts organizations; contributes to the strategic planning and short-range and long-range development of the Canada Council. Major responsibilities * Manages a staff of ten employees; * Manages the programs, activities, and budget of the Section; * Develops policy and program initiatives for enhancing Canada Council’s role in the development of Canada’s artists and arts organizations; * Promotes and ensures fair and equal access to programs by all qualified artists and arts organizations; * Contributes to the strategic planning and short-range long-range development of the Canada Council; Knowledge and skills The duties of the position require a thorough knowledge of the principles, theories, and practical aspects of management, as well as excellent project and program management skills. A thorough knowledge of the history and current state of media arts in Canada, a good knowledge of trends and new developments in media arts, and a good understanding of the Council's policies and its role as a funding agency is also required. The required knowledge and skills are normally acquired though the completion of a master's degree or equivalent professional practice. Experience Seven years of progressively responsible arts management and administration positions directly related to the media arts discipline. Responsibility for contacts The work involves daily contact with directors of media arts organizations and their boards; with artists and arts groups; with members of the Media Arts Advisory Committees; with staff of federal, provincial, and municipal agencies and of other groups involved in arts funding; with Council Board members, management, heads of section and other Council staff. These contacts are for the purpose of formulating policies and establishing programs for the Section in the context of Council's objectives; and to inform the artistic community in Canada and abroad of the Council's policies and programs. Contacts are also made within the artistic community to deliver speeches and presentations, and to develop new and excellent Peer Assessment members and to gather information in support of policy and program development. Supervision The work requires the management of a staff of ten, which includes the direct supervision of six employees. Working environment and travel The work is performed in a closed office environment. The incumbent is required to travel between 15 and 35 days per year. Language requirements This position requires the use of both official languages.
