Apply online at: http://www.ntjobs.org.uk/ Role Profile For the post of External Affairs Officer FULL TIME TEMPORARY POST - MATERNITY LEAVE COVER (6 months in the first instance) Accountable to: Secretary Accountable for: None Location: Central Office - Swindon (With occasional days in London and some travel) Grade: 6 Job summary: To be responsible for the development and effective and efficient management of the Trust’s European and overseas relations. Management and development of corporate communications arising from the Director-General’s office and Secretariat. Each element will constitute roughly 50% of the post-holder’s time However, occasionally situations may arise that require the post holder to perform other duties or tasks as may be reasonably requested by the Trust. Key result areas: European and overseas relations - Support and develop the National Trust’s approach to external relations in Europe and overseas to maximise their benefits for the Trust - Act as the first point of contact for international relationships with the National Trust and co-ordinate and assist NT staff and representatives in their European and overseas activities. - Develop and maintain relationships with European and overseas heritage and environmental bodies and networks and ensure that these relationships are optimised for the benefit of the National Trust. - Ensure that overseas enquiries about the Trust are handled efficiently and effectively and provide briefing for other responsible staff as necessary. - Gather and analyse relevant financial, political, economic and environmental data in order to manage European and overseas affairs effectively and contribute to the development of appropriate Trust policy and strategy. - Contribute to the preparation of consultation responses and to the Trust’s external policy and campaigns in order to ensure that they reflect the Trust’s overseas position. - Draft key speeches, articles and briefings for the Chairman, Director-General and other senior staff and generally service their information requirements in relation to European and overseas matters. - Corporate communications - Prepare briefings for the DG, Chairman and where needed other members of senior staff on general National Trust matters. - Draft the Annual Report and members’ Review, AGM speeches and assist generally with the development of corporate communications for the National Trust. - General - Be accountable for their own development through the Performance and Development Review (appraisal) process seeking out opportunities to learn new skills. (Individuals with line management responsibility are also accountable for the development of their staff.) - Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. - In addition, all employees are expected to work within the terms of their contract of employment and adhere to Trust policies and the Required Ways of Working. If an offer of employment is made, it will be subject to: - References received to the satisfaction of the Trust - The outcome of a health check - Successful completion of a probationary period. Initially this post will be based in Heelis, Kemble Drive, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN2 2NA although employees can be required to work at other Trust or non-Trust sites from time to time. All contracts of employment contain a mobility clause. Salary The post is graded as a National Trust Grade B06 with a starting salary of circa £30,000 per annum. As a charity, the National Trust usually appoints within the lower quartile of the grade based on applicants’ skills, knowledge and experience, and progression through the salary range is based on performance. Payment is made monthly in arrears by credit transfer to a bank or building society account. Hours of Work You will work 37.5 hours per week. In view of the National Trust's work employees can be called upon, from time to time, to work a reasonable period outside the set hours. No overtime will be payable. Holiday Entitlement Full time employees receive 25 days annual leave a year plus Public Holidays recognised by the Trust. The annual leave allowance rises to 28 days after three years’ service, and to 30 days after ten years’ service. Part-time employment or employment for part of the year gives a pro-rata entitlement for both annual leave and Public Holidays based on hours worked. The annual leave year runs from 1 April to 31 March. A maximum of 5 days may be carried forward from one leave year to the next. Dates for annual leave must be agreed in advance giving as much notice as possible. Notice All appointments are subject to satisfactory completion of a one month probationary period, though this may be extended if more time is needed to assess an employee’s suitability for employment. During this period the post will be subject to one week's notice on either side. A minimum of one month’s notice in writing on either side will apply after the probationary period has been confirmed. Retirement The Trust has a normal retirement age of 65 which coincides with the date pension benefits become payable. However, consideration is given to requests by employees to continue working beyond this age. Pension Employees are eligible to apply for membership of the National Trust Stakeholder Pension Scheme at any time, providing they are paid from the regular (permanent) payroll. If an employee joins the pension scheme within their probationary period they are automatically covered for the Death in Service & Permanent Health Insurance benefits. If an employee’s probationary period has passed and they apply to join the scheme, this will be on a discretionary basis. The employee will only be covered for the Death in service & Permanent Health Insurance benefits after completing a medical form and this has been underwritten by our insurers. Health & Safety All employees are expected to observe the Health and Safety at Work Regulations as they apply to the National Trust in accordance with statutory requirements. Contract All offers of employment are subject to a requirement to sign the National Trust’s contract of employment. Business Interests During employment with the National Trust employees must not engage, be concerned with or have any interest, either directly or indirectly, in any capacity, in other trade, business or occupation, except with the prior written consent of their Head of Department. Relocation Assistance with relocation expenses may be available. Membership of the National Trust In accordance with the National Trust Acts, members of the National Trust may not profit from membership. Therefore employees are not eligible for membership of the National Trust, and they must resign their membership on appointment. Life membership will be held in abeyance for the period of employment. Staff Card A staff card will be issued on commencement of employment that gives free admission to all National Trust and National Trust for Scotland properties.
