Programme Officer, Culture and World Heritage Position Number: 5011T Division: Canadian Commission for UNESCO Classification: CC-8 Affiliation: PSAC Duration: Up to April 30, 2007 Salary Scale: $ 55,045 to $ 66,840 Summary Under the general direction of the Secretary-General, Canadian Commission for UNESCO, the incumbent plans and manages the Commission’s activities related to UNESCO programmes on Culture and World Heritage, and ensures liaison and co-operation between the international community and Canada. The Programme Officer for the Canadian Commission for UNESCO will have a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of culture. He/she will be a mature individual with an understanding and appreciation of the role of UNESCO in international relations, and for the Commission’s unique position as an agency which ensures the liaison between UNESCO and both government and non-government organisations in Canada. Knowledge and skills The incumbent will have a university degree and will have focussed his/her professional career in the field of culture. The duties of the position require a good understanding of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO’s mandate, Constitution and By-Laws and programs, and its relationship with the Canada Council and international organisations including United Nations system. Awareness of, and sensitivity, to protocols and cultural diversity is also required to enable the incumbent to deal diplomatically and professionally with various officials from the approximately 191 Member States of UNESCO. Organisational skills and the ability to participate effectively as part of a team to meet critical deadlines are essential. Initiative, flexibility and adaptability are required to priorize work and participate in multiple and concurrent projects. Excellent writing skills (including grammar, punctuation and editing skills) are necessary to prepare draft texts for a variety of audiences. Excellent oral communication skills are also required to respond to inquiries from senior government officials and representatives of Member State organisations, the UNESCO Secretariat, as well as from elected officials, academics and members of the general public. Experience The position requires a minimum of ten (10) years directly related experience in the field of culture. He/she will have experience in working with a team. Working environment and travel The work is performed in an office environment. Attendance at meetings at other locations in Ottawa, and travel to attend meetings or events in other locations in Canada is required. Occasional travel abroad is also required. The duties of the position may involve evening and weekend work. Language requirements This position requires the use of both official languages.
