Program Officer - Media, Arts and Culture

Program Officer - Media, Arts and Culture Knowledge, Creativity and Freedom Media, Arts and Culture Summary Description: The Program Officer will be responsible for developing, monitoring and evaluating the Foundation’s West Africa programming in media, arts and culture. The program’s overall goal is to promote the use of media, arts and culture as key resources for strengthening social, cultural and economic development. The program covers two areas: (1) strengthening media pluralism and freedom of expression in the media; and (2) strengthening the capacity of arts and culture institutions to promote arts and culture enterprises broadly, including but not limited to catalyzing support for individual artists and culture workers and their institutions. The program officer will assess previous work in media with a view to sharpening support for media pluralism in the region in line with Foundation-wide work in this area. S/he will also broaden support for the development of vibrant creative enterprises in West Africa. Working with the Representative in Lagos and other Ford Foundation staff, the Program Officer will develop grantmaking strategies; identify prospective grantees; solicit, review and respond to grant proposals; and prepare recommendations for Foundation funding. In addition to developing the media, arts and culture agenda, the Program Officer is expected to contribute to the office’s overall strategic direction for the region. The Program Officer will also collaborate with colleagues in the Foundation’s other offices to advance a worldwide agenda around the Foundation’s goals in the media, arts and culture fields. Qualifications: A degree in the arts, humanities, media or other cultural disciplines (preferably an advanced degree); substantial professional experience in the arts, culture and the media; an understanding of program development and the ability to conceptualize programmatic ideas and strategies; strong managerial, organizational and interpersonal skills; excellent analytical and writing skills in English; and strong facilitating skills. Experience in West Africa is highly desirable, as is grant-making experience and proficiency in French. Location: Lagos, Nigeria.
