Director

The University of Manchester seeks new Directors for The Manchester Museum and The Whitworth Art Gallery. Playing key roles in the UK's largest university and in the region, both Directors will have the vision, drive and leadership to develop the Museum and the Art Gallery further as an engaging and accessible interface between higher education and wider society. The Whitworth Art Gallery is one of the premier UK art museums within university ownership, and is highly reputed for its collections of fine art, textiles and wallpapers, which are designated as being of national and international importance. In addition to maintaining and developing strategic links and academic engagement with higher education students and staff and promoting widening participation, the Whitworth Art Gallery provides a full public education programme linked to its busy series of temporary exhibitions and continuously changing displays of its extensive permanent collections. The appointee will have the vision, drive and leadership to develop the strategic integration of the Gallery with the goals and values of the University so that it provides a respected and valued resource in support of research and teaching and learning. They will also be committed to engaging with diverse audiences to make the Gallery and its resources accessible to and valued by wider society. Applicants should have experience of art museums internationally, and at least ten years' service at senior level in an art museum, with involvement in acquisition, collections management, exhibition administration and education. The incumbent will also have experience of generating and managing plural funding streams, and of fundraising to secure project funding. Developed leadership skills, and the ability to build and sustain effective alliances with partners in the University, the region and the UK will be essential.
