Literature Director

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) is seeking a Literature Director. The position is located in the Folk/Traditional, Literature, Musical Theater and Theater Division where the incumbent reports to the Deputy Chairman for Grants and Awards and serves as the Agency's nationally recognised expert and authority in the field of Literature. Duties to be performed by the incumbent are as follows:

  • Works as a team member within the Division and provides professional leadership and authoritative consultation services, advice and guidance within and between Divisions on the development of guidelines, leadership initiatives and the review of applications/proposals;
  • Provides national leadership and direction concerning agency assessments of funding and other assistance for the field of Literature;
  • Reviews proposals from Literature constituents, manages panel review process for applications, proposes funding amounts, presents grant recommendations for consideration by the Chairman, Senior Deputy Chairman, Deputy Chairman for Grants and Awards, and to the National Council on the Arts;
  • Works with other Division directors, Deputy Chairmen, Senior Staff, constituents, private and public funders and top-level officials of other agencies and organisations to design national leadership initiatives and develop partnerships to advance the Literature field and the arts as a whole;
  • Selects experts in the Literature field to serve as pre-screening and panel reviewers and chairs panel meetings. Organises groups of reviewers and consultants appointed by the Chairman, Senior Deputy Chairman, and Deputy Chairman for Grants and Awards to assist in evaluating proposals and planning future programs;
  • Act as the Arts Endowment's representative on matters affecting the Literature field. Participates in meetings and conferences addressing Literature issues. Communicates Arts Endowment policy developments that may have an impact upon artistic or administrative operations;
  • Participates in the formulation of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to implement legislation affecting the Arts Endowment. This includes recommendations concerning budget formulation;
  • Maintains good relations with leaders in the field and related fields and keeps abreast of their perspective on current and future trends. Travels to attend performances, visit facilities, conduct site visits and discuss issues with applicants, grantees, other interested parties, and the general public. Qualifications Candidates are required to have a strong professional background in and broad knowledge of the field of Literature and exhibit an established standing in the Literature communities. Candidates should have experience in leadership, or managerial positions; arts administration; and grants administration. Additional experience would include activities such as responding to legislative inquiries, composing and explaining procedural and policy proposals to constituents in the Literature field, and providing leadership and authoritative consultation to colleagues in the development of organisational guidelines.
