Dance Director

The National Endowment for the Arts is seeking a Director of Dance to serve as the agencys nationally recognised expert and authority for the field. This position is located in the Dance, Design, Media, Museums and Visual Arts Division of the NEA. The incumbent reports to the Deputy Chairman for Grants and Awards, National Endowment for the Arts, and serves as the agency's nationally recognised expert and authority for the field of dance. The successful candidate will: - work as a team member within the agency and provide professional leadership and authoritative consultation services, advice and guidance on the development of guidelines, leadership initiatives and the review of applications/proposals. - recommend experts in the Dance field to serve as pre-screening and panel reviewers and consultants to assist in evaluating proposals and planning future programs. - review proposals from the Dance field and oversee the awarding of grants, contracts or cooperative agreements resulting from such proposals. - work with other Discipline Directors, Specialists, Division Coordinators and staff within and between divisions to oversee and implement application review. - provide funding and related advice to the Deputy Chairman for Grants and Awards. - oversee monitoring of grantee performance through review and approval of progress, interim and final reports, amendment requests, conversations with the grantee, etc., to assure that the grantee is functioning in accordance with the terms and conditions of the grant. - work with other Discipline Directors, Deputy Chairmen, Senior Staff, constituents, private and public funders and top-level officials of other agencies and organisations to design national leadership initiatives and develop partnerships to advance the Dance field. - represent the Dance field in discussions throughout the agency including collaborations with other disciplines. - provide national leadership and direction for providing funding and other assistance for the Dance field. - study and analyse conditions and trends as they relate to and affect the Dance field; formulate and recommend appropriate grant programs and leadership initiatives for relevant groups and organisations. - participate in meetings and conferences addressing Dance issues. - maintains good relations with leaders in the field and related fields and keep abreast of their perspective on current and future trends. - serve as a team member on ad hoc teams to provide quick responses to special projects and studies probably involving more than one organisation, division, discipline, or function. - participate in formulation of rules, regulations, policies and procedures to implement legislation affecting the National Endowment for the Arts. QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS Candidates must have: - Demonstrated expertise and comprehensive knowledge of the Dance field in order to represent the National Endowment for the Arts to audiences including leading national figures in the field and to explain, support and defend Arts Endowment policies, initiatives and other actions. - An overall appreciation and understanding of the Dance field, including classical, modern, jazz, ethnic, folk and contemporary dance forms and a strong professional background in the field of dance presentation and performance. - Experience in artistic practice; leadership or managerial positions; arts administration; and the ability to work with artists and other notables in the Dance field. - An established standing in the Dance community. - Knowledge of federal grant-making process to achieve Arts Endowment goals and objectives and to assist with the development of funding and related opportunities for the Dance field. - Skill in effective oral and written communication to present the Arts Endowment's position on issues, particularly those of a sensitive nature.
