MANAGING EDITOR

The Alliance for the Arts, a nonprofit arts service organization dedicated to information services, policy research and advocacy for the arts in New York, is currently seeking a Managing Editor. The Alliance publishes uniquely comprehensive, reliable and current guides to cultural attractions and events in New York City. These publications include two database-driven Web sites --http://www.nyc-arts.organdhttp://www.nyckidsarts.org, NYC ARTS (published in the summer for a general audience), NYCkidsARTS (published in the spring and fall for parents, teachers and students), and book-length catalogues of cultural institutions and arts education programs. The Managing Editor will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of these publications, including liaison with the field; submissions processing and reviewing; subscription fulfillment; circulation management; and general administration. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a 52-week production schedule, including standing and new projects
  • Soliciting information from cultural organizations in New York City and New York State
  • Coordinating the design and distribution of print publications
  • Coordinating the design, functionality and content creation for Web sites
  • Coordinating advertising
  • Managing promotional efforts for the Web sites and publications
  • Assisting the Editor with production management
The Managing Editor is a new position at the Alliance, providing a unique opportunity to shape the future of our publications and our process for promoting cultural activity in the city and state of New York. The position is offered with a one-year renewable contract. Qualifications The candidate should possess strong planning and organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and computer and Internet literacy. He/she will have the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks concurrently. Flexibility, responsibility, initiative and an interest in the arts are personal characteristics of the ideal candidate. Experience in publishing and knowledge of the New York cultural community are assets.
