MANAGING DIRECTOR
Second Generation (2g) seeks a new Managing Director to guide and manage the dynamic non-profit arts organization`s exponential growth and expansion. Second Generation is one of the country`s preminent Asian American theater companies, dedicated to bringing world-class Asian American stories to the world`s stage. Over the past five years, Second Generation has burst onto the nation`s cultural map, creating innovative and original theater that crosses cultural, racial, and generational boundaries. The company`s landmark rock musical, "Making Tracks," has played to over 50,000 people around the world, and is currently in production in Seattle. In 2002 and 2003, the company will undergo large-scale growth, with its first concert at Carnegie Hall, the world premiere of its highly anticipated production of Ang Lee`s "The Wedding Banquet," the continued touring of "Making Tracks," and on-going concerts and plays in New York. The Managing Director will partner with Founder/Artistic Director Welly Yang and Board, leading part-time staff, volunteers, and outside contractors, in managing and executing the business and administrative side of the organization`s theater productions, as well as its general operations of the non-profit. In this unique time, we are seeking someone to help lead 2g to a new level of institutional stability and prominence. In turn, the Managing Director will be an integral part of a vital and active artistic community of established and emerging artists that is recognized by a wide cross- section of audiences, critics, and funders. Responsibilities include 1) Working with AD in creating and managing project/ production budgets and cash flow, as well as organization`s operating budget of over $500k. 2) Working with AD in supervising and managing the productions of the Carnegie Hall concert, Wedding Banquet in Taiwan, and future Making Track productions. Booking and managing other productions for 2g in new venues as appropriate. 3) Working with AD and Board in building and managing fund development. Managing volunteers and consultants in grantwriting process and expanding individual donor base. MD will do occasional grantwriting him/herself. 4) With legal counsel, leading contract negotiations with co-producers, orporate sponsors, and artists. 5) Responsible for preparing and delivering presentations to corporate sponsors, presenters, and co- producers. 6) Coordinating and executing day-to-day management with part-time staff and volunteers. Requirements * A passion and dedication to 2g and its mission * 2+ years experience in theater management or production and/or 4+ years general business experience * Experience in leading and delegating teams * Strong written and oral skills * Experience drafting and making proposals/presentations * Knowledge and experience building budgets and models in Excel; and comfortable with Word * Comfortable in public setting, whether making live presentations, occasional cold-calls, or interacting at community events Pluses * Experience in fundraising * Experience growing and/or leading arts or business organization * Experience in event-planning or theatrical production * Familiarity with Access and Power point * Fluency in Mandarin, to communicate with producers in Taiwan and Hong Kong but not necessary. Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and ability to meet fundraising goals.
