EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Founded in San Jose, California in 1989, MACLA is an energizing contemporary arts space where Latino artists create and showcase new work in the visual, literary, and performance arts to help define, interpret, and transform society. With a budget of $600,000 and a staff of seven MACLA is a well-managed organization that has earned the respect and admiration of key stakeholders both locally and nationally. Building on a successful track record of community partnerships, MACLA is currently working with three other local arts organizations and the City of San Jose to purchase and renovate an existing building that upon completion will house both exhibit and administrative space for all four agencies. MACLA''s eight member Board of Directors is active and committed to a smooth transition of leadership and continued development. BASIC FUNCTION The Executive Director develops a strong and healthy relationship with the board of directors to establish long-term strategic direction for the organization while working with staff to implement programs aligned with MACLA''s vision, mission and values. He/she oversees all administrative operations including all aspects of financial management, personnel, fundraising, and marketing, and represents the organization to donors, elected officials, local and national arts organizations and other community based organizations. The Executive Director will provide leadership and vision to the long-term development/negotiation of a permanent space for MACLA in conjunction with the 500 S. First Art Center collaborative. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS This position reports directly to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director directly supervises these staff positions Director of Visual Arts, Director of Performance & Literary Programs and Office Manager. RESPONSIBILITIES FUND DEVELOPMENT Keeps abreast of national and local philanthropic trends and activities that affect MACLA''s fundraising efforts. Takes a leadership role in the planning and implementation of MACLA''s fundraising efforts, including personal solicitations, foundation/corporation grants and capital campaigns. FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION Serves as the chief administrator of the agency. Hires, evaluates, supervises and when necessary, terminates staff. Directs the preparation of the annual budget and submits to the Board for approval. Ensures MACLA adheres to professional standards of budgeting, accounting, bookeeping, reporting, and fiscal discipline. This includes an annual professional audit of MACLA''s financial statements. Approves purchases and expenditures within the limits of the Board-approved budget. Negotiates all agency contracts and grants. MARKETING & COMMUNITY RELATIONS Promotes good public relations by representing the organization as its chief executive officer in all dealings with other organizations, individuals, and the general public. Actively seeks out press coverage opportunities for MACLA and acts as chief spokesperson for the organization. Continues to increase attendance and participation in programs by ensuring MACLA''s events are publicized and marketed to the appropriate audiences. Ensures that all outbound marketing materials adhere to a consistent look & feel to maintain a clear brand identity for MACLA Oversees maintenance of MACLA''s website so that content is current and compelling STRATEGIC PLANNING Works with the Board to prepare a long-range strategic plan for the organization and assures implementation/completion of its goals and objectives. PROGRAMMING Works with staff to develop programs that support MACLA''s mission and local community Oversees program structure to ensure effectiveness. Evaluates programs for consideration of ongoing support or renewal as appropriate. BOARD OF DIRECTORS Attends, as an active participant, all Board meetings and, if appropriate, board committee meetings. Reports regularly to the Board regarding progress towards organizational objectives, financial status of the organization and other issues concerning the Board. Provides the Board with adequate and timely information to help members reach sound decisionsh and establish policies. Initiates and directs the development of policies for Board approval. Supervises the implementation of approved Board policies. CANDIDATE PROFILE Education/Experience Experience in, and understanding of, Latino arts in contemporary cutting edge art spaces. Experience in making strategic business decisions at a senior executive level within an organization of comparable size and scope to MACLA. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in matters pertaining to personnel policies and procedures. Bachelor''s degree Skills & Abilities Demonstrated fundraising success with individuals, foundations and corporate donors. Financial and/or business management experience at a level comparable to MACLA, including budgeting, oversight, and compliance and reporting abilities High-level communication skills. Able to articulate the MACLA story to a variety of audiences and constituencies. Sophisticated in the practice of political advocacy both in legislative and funding proceedings. Ability to maintain staff morale and a high level of performance by effectively utilizing the talents of staff. Ability to conceptualize, communicate and lead the entire organization to shared visions and new direction, in response to changing community needs. Aware of trends in art administration and funding. A clear understanding of the role of the board vs. the role of the ED/staff, and an appreciation of the synergetic relationship necessary between the board president and executive director.
