'We will act as facilitators...’, stated the Minister of Culture designate
Juan Manuel Santos Calderón, President of the Republic of Colombia, has designated Mariana Garcés Córdoba as the new Minister of Culture.
He also confirmed the appointment of the ex Senator Jairo Clopatofsky as new Director of Coldeportes, appointed Beatriz de Londoño as the new Vice-minister of Health and confirmed Elvira Forero as the Director of the Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (ICBF).
Mariana Garcés Córdoba, who was worked for over 30 years within the cultural sector, accepted the challenge of taking over this Ministry which is going through a good moment.
The appointment as Minister of Culture surprised her when she was preparing the next Cali Arts Festival at Casa Proartes which is placed at the historical centre of the city.
This position will be an arduous one. “Minister Paula Marcela’s administration was excellent, it is a well organized Ministry, that has a clear public policy and a very important information system – anyhow, as usual, culture is a dynamic subject that finds no rest” were her words.
This is why, “the Ministry’s function, during my administration, will be that of acting as a facilitator of Colombia’s cultural processes. We are a pluriethnic and multicultural country. Our cultural richness is infinite and we will act as its facilitator. We have very important challenges”, she asserted.
Every municipality has a public library and her idea is that of providing them with content. She will also work jointly with the ministries of Foreign Trade, Communications, and Foreign Affairs to give continuity to Colombia’s significant international presence.
Work will be intense since there are ongoing projects like the national plan for dance, the heritage law and others that must be completed.
“Film is a very strong area and efforts must be made so that it gets better and cultural heritage is an area that cannot be left aside – tangible and intangible heritage are passionate subjects”, were the words of Garcés Córdoba.
One of her priorities will be education. Cultural events that have been recovered in the remotest corners of the country will continue having an important place for the Ministry, but as a result of education.
“I believe that with the help of all Colombians, of the creative sector, of all artists, and of all cultural administrators we will continue promoting the Ministry of Culture” were her final words.
Marian Garcés Córdoba works as the Executive Director of the Asociación para la Promoción de las Artes (Proartes) in Cali. She majored in Law at Universidad de los Andes and specialized in Marketing and International Business at the Universidad Icesi.
She has held positions in the regional and national cultural sector: she was manager of Telepacífico and Television Commissioner.
She has directed several times Cali’s Festival Internacional de las Artes. She has been leading the organization, administration and strengthening or Cali’s Philharmonic Orchestra since 2002.
Between the years 2005 and 2007 she was Cali’s Culture and Tourism Secretary.
