70 countries gather for Summit
Almost 450 delegates from 70 countries are meeting at Museum Africa in Newtown, Johannesburg for the 4th World Summit on Arts & Culture.
Delegates hail from 29 African countries and 41 other countries and from every continent across the globe. This Summit marks the highest ever number of delegates and speakers from the African continent.
Speaking from the Summit, Ms Annabell Lebethe, CEO: NAC said: “We are thrilled that the numbers have exceeded all expectations considering the global economic downturn. It is a wonderful affirmation of the global interest in Africa’s story of how the arts have been central to our social development and cultural identity. We have much to share with the world.
“We look forward to telling the story of how this Summit – a unique international meeting of arts funders, policy makers and organizations - will advance empowerment by creating new visions for the arts in Africa and stimulating innovations in funding strategies,” she continued.
Co-hosted by the National Arts Council (NAC) on behalf of the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA), the 4th World Summit on Arts & Culture was officially opened yesterday by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Minister: Lulu Xingwana.
The Summit concludes on Friday, 25 September 2009.
