Sir Christopher Frayling's valedictory lecture

Sir Christopher Frayling delivered his valedictory lecture at Royal Institute of British Architects on 30 January marking the end of his five year tenure as chair of Arts Council England. The lecture, ‘Slaying the Sixth Giant: On being Chair of the Arts Council’, was chaired by TV presenter Kirsty Wark. The ‘Sixth Giant’ of the title refers to the aim sixty years ago of the newly founded welfare state to ‘slay the five giants of physical poverty’. The Arts Council set out to tackle the sixth giant, poverty of aspiration.

As well as addressing this original vision of the Arts Council’s founders, the lecture discussed the nature and purposes of public arts funding. It also asked whether the Arts Council has achieved, and whether it continues to achieve, its original aims.

Broadcaster and journalist Dame Elizabeth Forgan became the new chair of ACE earlier this month.
