Georgian cultural heritage sites located in the conflict zone are under threat
Ten monuments of cultural heritage in Georgia were damaged as a result of the Georgian-Russian conflict. But, the number of monuments damaged on the Russian occupied and separatist-controlled territories of South Ossetia may increase further. In Tbilisi, they actually do not have information about the state of the monuments located on this territory. As a result, the Georgian government demands urgent implementation of a UNESCO mission in South Ossetia, with the aim of studying and assessing the condition of these monuments.
Information about damage of the of Georgia’s cultural heritage sites during the Georgia-Russia conflict period is mainly spread by the local population and museum staff. Based on information provided by them, data from the Georgian Ministry of Culture, UNOSAT satellite photos and maps, and the National Security Council of Georgia has prepared a 26-page report. The report titled “Russian Aggression in Georgia: facts and figures” provide relatively precise information about the damage to the monuments. Monuments of cultural heritage located in the conflict zone and adjacent territories were mostly damaged as a result of aviation attacks.
