The cultural challenge of climate change

On 25 September, a 40 strong crew of artists and scientists will set sail on Cape Farewell’s Disko Bay expedition to the west coast of Greenland. Among this eclectic crew there are 10 musicians (including KT Tunstall, Martha Wainwright and Javis Cocker), two architects, two oceanographers, a ceramicist and a comedian.

Cape Farewell is an Arts Council funded organisation that pioneers the cultural response to climate change. It works with artists, scientists and communicators, and brings them together to produce art based in scientific research and findings.

This is the organisation’s seventh expedition, and on 25 September the crew will board the science research vessel – Grigory Mikheev, from Kangerlussuaq to Disko Bay. The boat will then voyage across the front of the Jakobshavn Glacier; one of Greenland’s largest glaciers moving at a faster rate than ever before, losing 20 million tons of ice everyday.

Daily blogs, photographs and video will be posted on the website (www.capefarewell.com) as the journey unfolds, and crewmember and film director, Peter Gilbert will be documenting the journey for a film for the Sundance TV Channel.

Moira Sinclair, Executive Director of Arts Council England, London said:
‘Art communicates on a level that can transcend raw data and scientific findings; art offers people a deep emotional resonance – regardless of age, gender or background. What Cape Farewell shows is that art is both complimentary and essential to the climate challenges we face. We are proud to support this project and wish the team the best of luck on their expedition.’
