Ministry supports grants artistic training of indigenous youth
The Minister for Culture, Communication and Women’s Rights, Mrs. Christine St-Pierre, announced that $50,000 will be provided to the Wapikoni Mobile Corporation to help train indigenous youth in remote areas. "It is an original idea which deserves particular attention because there are almost no artistic and cultural projects of national scale intended for indigenous youth. Moreover, it is completely in conformity with the ministerial action plan which intends to support participation of all citizens in cultural life," said St-Pierre. The Wapikoni Mobile is a traveling production studio which offers audio-visual and musical training to youths from the Algonquine, Atikamewk, Innue, Mohawk and Crie communities. The studio can access remote areas of Quebec and introduces to young people workshops that are tailored to their culture. The project has aroused considerable interest within indigenous communities and several artistic and governmental organizations have contributed. Throughout the year, the Wapikoni Mobile project will reach up to 190 indigenous youths and allow 70 artistic projects to be carried out. For more information (in French), CLICK HERE.
