Zimbabwe arts to step up says former Secretary
Former Secretary for Education, Sport and Culture in Zimbabwe, Stephen Chifunyise, has stated that the multi-billion dollar arts and culture industry will remain in limbo unless there are effective arts organisations to spearhead growth in the sector. The comments were made during the National Arts and Culture Indaba, held in Kadoma. He said that it was common knowledge that national arts associations established in the 80s had collapsed or remained in forms that were not representative of their sectors. Those that do exist have either become trusts or foundations, with little ability to communicate with their members. The former Secretary also mentioned that the national organisations that receive current funding should be doing something to assist the situation. Chifunyise said: "The collapse of national arts associations has, in turn, led to the collapse of annual festivals, exhibitions and skills development workshops. This, in turn, has led to the lowering of artistic standards, the destruction of collaboration and the marginalisation of many artists, especially those in the rural areas as well as the absence of a collective voice and forum to lobby Government and parastatal bodies in the arts and culture sector”.
