Cultural diversity in classical music sector to be explored

The Association of British Orchestras (ABO) will hold a conference next month to discuss issues of cultural diversity in the classical music sector. Adam Powell, ABO Projects Manager, said the increasing importance of widening audiences for classical music had become apparent at the annual ABO conference earlier this year. ‘It became clear that orchestras sought a platform to discuss the opportunities and challenges they face in broadening their remit to reach a wider audience community,’ he said. The national forum would enable leading UK private sector companies, not-for-profit organisations and arts professionals to share best practice, Powell said. Lord Claus Moser, Chairman of the British Museum Development Trust, will deliver the opening address at the event, entitled Is Classical Music Ready for Diversity? Meanwhile, an ‘Audience Development Lab’ will involve focus group participants from culturally diverse communities that orchestras are attempting to reach.
