Craft industry adds value to Jamaican tourism product

Executive Director of the Jamaican Tourism Product Development Company, (TPDCo), Karl Binger, has commented that tourism in Jamaica would not 'reach its full potential, without a vibrant, flourishing craft business, enriching the product offering.' Speaking at the first national conference of craft traders at the Wyndham Rose Hall Hotel in Montego Bay, Binger said that craft is part of the fabric of the Jamaican culture. 'The creativity, the colour and the richness of the craft and the enduring spirit of our craft traders are the qualities that appeal to our visitors and capture their imagination.' Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Simpson Miller has stated that community-based tourism should be a part of the tourism strategy, as some visitors were more interested in mingling with the people of the country. 'I believe it is time for us to move craft-trading business from its lowly status, where most people are struggling to make a living, into a highly profitable operation,' she added.
