The Museum: A World Forum

The Museum: A World Forum is a major international conference and reunion to celebrate 40 years of museum studies at the University of Leicester, running from 25th-27th April 2006. Nearly 200 years ago there was an explosion of public museums, and it seems that spirit of growth and diversification has never diminished. What made the idea so appropriate then and how do museums remain relevant today? Adopted by a diverse range of cultures, embodying nationhood and identity, concretising knowledge, understanding and social memory, a tool for social and educational development, a political icon, a mode of entertainment and communication - this international conference aims all that the museum was, is and can become. The conference will be made up of keynotes, spoken contributions, poster papers, and discussion and feedback sessions. There will be social events including a conference dinner and a reunion of staff and students. The three major subject areas are:

  • Paradigm and Purpose (Day 1)
  • Collections and Community (Day 2)
  • Forum and Technology (Day 3) Papers for the conference are currently being invited. Deadline for papers is 15 June 2005. Visit the conference website for full details on submission. Invited international speakers include:
