Funding request

Your Question

Question received from OLAKUNLE WILLIAMS MAKINDE, - Not Known/not applicable, Nigeria.

I assumed the headship as the heritage site manager of one of the 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nigeria on 30th April 2010.

As a professional archaeologist/an ICCROM/Africa 2009 trained heritage site manager since year 2001, I immediately commenced on the general physical assessment of the 112 hectares of land which serves as both the core and buffer zone of the property. Among many of the challenges faced by the site include lack of adequate conservation chemicals to preserve the sculptural pieces erected by the late Madam Susan Wenger to represent the different Yoruba gods in the sacred grove and other challenges.

How can I access funds from international funding support to enable me preserve the site?

Our Answer

Thank you for your email. IFACCA is a network of arts councils and ministries of culture, and as such, does not offer any funding programs.

In the first instance, you may wish to contact the UNESCO International Assistance program. International Assistance under the World Heritage Convention is granted to the State Parties to the World Heritage Convention, in order to help them protect the World Cultural or Natural Heritage located on their territories and inscribed on the World Heritage List, the List of World Heritage in Danger or on their Tentative List. The website is: http://whc.unesco.org/en/intassistance/

You may also wish to contact organisations active in international philanthropy. A preliminary list is available from our website:  http://www.ifacca.org/links/international-philanthropy-key-agencies-and-networks/

I hope these resources are of use to you. Best wishes for this important work.
