Annual reports - best practice
Your Question
Question received from Nicola Mullenger, LabforCulture.org - Laboratory of European Cultural Cooperation, Netherlands.I was wondering if you have collected – or have examples – of best practice in annual reports in the arts and cultural sector. It would be an interesting resource to have as we all need to show more and more how effectively we spend money. I can find some examples in the business sector of course but not on the arts. Any ideas?
Our Answer
Thanks for your email. I haven’t seen any best practice guides to writing an annual report, but we do have some examples of annual reports from arts councils and ministries of culture, which may be of assistance to you:

Some other resources that may be of use (relating to business planning and self assessment) are available from the good practice section of our website (Information Provision tab) http://www.ifacca.org/goodpractice/ . For example:

Also recommended is Enhancing not-for-profit annual and financial reporting, http://www.charteredaccountants.com.au/Industry-Topics/Reporting/Current-issues/Not-for-profit/New-and-updates/~/media/Files/Industry%20topics/Reporting/Not%20for%20profit/NotforProfitReport.ashx published by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. While this is not aimed directly at the arts sector, it has a useful checklist of components to be included in an annual report.
