Meeting IFACCA’s Pacific members
On 7-8 July, IFACCA was able to meet some its members from the Pacific region at the Meeting of Asia-Pacific Cultural Organizations on the 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions as a framework for developing the cultural industries of the Asia/Pacific region, held in Sydney, Australia.
The meeting, which was presented by the International Federation of Coalitions for Cultural Diversity (IFCCD) and the Commonwealth Foundation, in association with the Australian and Canadian Coalitions for Cultural Diversity, was attended by 15 delegates including IFACCA members from Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Australia, as well as the Adviser for Culture at the Secretariat of the Pacific Communities’ Human Development Programme, Elise Huffer. Discussions focussed on the ratification and implementation of the 2005 Convention, opportunities for action by cultural organizations, culture in sustainable development, and specific challenges within the Asia-Pacific region.
IFACCA’s General Manager, Karilyn Brown, and Research and Policy Officer, Natasha Eves, had an opportunity to meet briefly over lunch on the second day with the IFACCA members and Dr Huffer and to discuss key issues in the Pacific and provide an update on IFACCA’s projects and future plans.
The meeting enabled a brief follow-up on the three-day Council of Pacific Arts meeting and Workshop organised by the SPC in Noumea, New Caledonia, in March, attended by IFACCA’s Executive Director, Sarah Gardner.
