CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN RURAL AND REMOTE AREAS
We are delighted to welcome in the new year with the release of a D'Art research report on cultural development in rural and remote areas. This topic was initiated by an international network of partners looking to identify good practice in facilitating the arts, creative industries and cultural development in rural and remote areas. The report, prepared by Ruth Smiles, Executive Director, Regional Arts Australia, builds on an audit of information on cultural development in rural and remote areas that was developed for a conference in Australia in August 2005. The audit is an annotated bibliography that covers a wide range of resources such as research publications, conferences and events, projects and organisations. Ms Smiles analyses these materials to identify and explore key themes and issues in rural and remote cultural development, including: financing, accessing new markets, partnership development, increasing employment opportunities for people in rural and remote communities, and improving quality of life for regional and rural communities.
